Kelantan is at the north-east coast of Peninsular Malaysia facing the South China Sea and covers a land area of 14,922 sq km and comprises 10 districts: Gua Musang, Kota Bharu, Tumpat, Bachok, Pasir Mas, Machang, Tanah Merah, Pasir Puteh, Jeli, Kuala Krai. Kelantan is a veritable, treasure trove of delights. Its rustic fishing villages, verdant padi fields and languid, palm-fringed beaches have captivated many. Kelantan offers a world of gracious beauty and an old-world charm that few can resist.

Its state capital, Kota Bharu, is a bustling town well connected to other major towns in Malaysia and serves as the centre for Kelantan's administrative and business activities. Among the fascinating attractions here include the colourful Pasar Siti Khadijah (Central Market), where you will see women entrepreneurs in their traditional dress sitting on tables with their wares around them.

An interesting way to see rustic life is by a boat cruise up the Kelantan River. Visitors can go river rafting and shooting the rapids on the Nenggiri River, and freshwater fishing from the interior town of Gua Musang.

Kelantan is also noted for its rebana ubi (large drums) and traditional games such as wau (giant kite) flying and gasing (top) spinning. Experience Kelantanese unique cuisine such as nasi kerabu (a rice dish with mix vegetables) and ayam percik (grilled chicken with a uniquely spiced sauce).

Kelantan's economy is primarily agrarian with the main cash crops being rice paddy, rubber and tobacco. Fishing and livestock rearing are important economic activities.

Kelantan specialises in agro-based activities, focusing on herbal cultivation (Gua Musang & Jeli), fisheries (Integrated Fisheries Park in Tok Bali, aquaculture in Pergau) and poultry production (Gua Musang & Jeli).

Handicraft products by master craftsmen such as silverware and wood-carvings have potential for growth.

The ECER development will enable the dominant positioning of Kelantan to serve as the principal East Coast cross-border trading and tourism centre. Kelantan will focus on human capital development, in line with the state’s recognition of the rakyat as a key resource and the engine of economic growth.
